A family trip to Ireland - Eine Familienreise durch Irland

The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.
Psalm 138:8

Our trip to Ireland was marvelous!
Having been to Ireland before some 20 years ago, Richard and I made it a point not to revisit the same places. The Green Island has too much to offer than just to kiss the Blarney Stone again, bike the Ring of Kerry again, and redo all the same things. This time, we traveled a route that included all new places and it seemed like a whole new experience! Especially places along the Atlantic Coast were a wonderful discovery that we all enjoyed immensely!
We started our first night in Cork with Fish and Chips from a place that was recommended to us. It was a delicious meal for some hungry travelers!

Along the way, we even picked up a few words in Gaelic - the original language of Ireland from before the English occupation. The further west in Ireland you go the more you will see signs in Gaelic until at some point you get to places that might show Gaelic only.

This is as close as we got to Leprechauns! :)

In all these years of travelling across the Atlantic, I never have braved just going with hand luggage. This time we did! And it worked beautifully! The kids are now older and can very much pull their own weight (no pun intended). So everyone, even my 4 year old, dutifully pulled their little suitcase across train stations, airports, and along streets. In fact, it worked so well that I would do it again! Of course, you can only do this if you stay with family or friends whose washer you can use. Staying at a hotel which charges you by the piece for washing, this method of travel might get costly.
Going by way of Ireland to get to Germany was a great idea. I would do this method of traveling on a stopover again anytime. It requires careful planning and might be a bit tedious on the way home, but the memories we made! It was so worth it!

Was du
Psalm 138, 8

Unsere Reise nach Irland was grossartig!

The Rock of Cashel

Happy travelers with hand luggage en route through Germany.
Froehliche Reisende mit Handgepaeck auf dem Weg durch Deutschland.

The wise goddess with the olive tree - Who am I?

As promised, here is the essay that Eliane presented at Faces of History 2019.

I was wise.
I was even-tempered.
I was the goddess of warfare.
Although Zeus had many children, I, fortunately, was his favorite. As the female counterpart to Ares, I was the goddess of war but also of the sciences and weaving.
How I entered the world of Mount Olympus is rather unusual.
The people of Athens chose me to be their patron for my practical gift.

I was the wise goddess of the sciences but also of cooking and pottery. Although I oversaw all arts and crafts, I was especially known for weaving and spinning. Perhaps I, who was wise and even-tempered, was best known as the goddess of warfare and wisdom. I was the female counterpart to Ares the brave god of war. During the time of the Trojan War, my weapons became famous. I had a stunning spear, a glistening shield, a magnificent helmet, and shinning armor. Famously, the owl and the olive tree were my symbols. My job was protecting civil and cooperative life in the city.
I was the wise and even-tempered goddess of warfare.

There are several legends concerning my origin. One of the stories is told like this. After Zeus married Metis, a titan, he heard a troubling prophecy. If Metis had any sons, they would be more powerful than Zeus, just as Zeus had been more powerful than his father Cronos. Terribly afraid, Zeus thought up a cunning plan. When he was sitting with Metis, he suddenly changed his unsuspecting wife into a fly. After that transformation, he swallowed her, and kept her inside his head. Later on, Zeus started suffering from a terrible headache that felt like a stampede of raging war horses. What a horrible head-splitting headache! In his desperation, he asked one of the other gods to crack his skull open. Trying to be helpful, his son Hephaestus brandished his ax and cracked his father's skull open. From that wound I sprang, surprisingly fully grown and wearing armor. It turned out that I became the favorite child of Zeus.
My birth was truly unusual and remarkable.

There was a radiant city in Ancient Greece. Both Poseidon and I loved the city very much. The gods who resided on Mount Olympus all decided that whichever god created the most useful gift for its people would win the city. Miraculously, Poseidon struck a rock with his trident and brought forth a spring. When the people drank from it, though, the water was salty. I, however, decided to plant an olive tree. Because the people could use the olives and its precious oil, my gift was most useful.
It was decided.
I won.
The people rejoiced.
After this contest, they named the city Athens.
This is how the olive tree won me the beautiful city of Athens.

Fortunately, as the goddess of warfare, I was wise and even-tempered.
My birth was unusual and remarkable.
My life-giving present of an olive tree won the citizens of Athens over and they chose me to be the guardian of their city.
As one of the wiser and most even-tempered goddesses I brought much sense to the Ancient world of Greece and to the gods on Mount Olympus.

Who am I?

Faces of History - Gesichter der Geschichte

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.
Proverbs 1:7

Sprueche 1, 7

Faces of History is a big highlight of our school year at Classical Conversations. In Essentials, the students of 4th, 5th, and 6th grade learn all about English grammar and creative writing with some math games interspersed. Toward the end of the year, each students gets to pick a character of the cycle we are studying. This year we were learning all about Ancient Empires.

This was Eliane's first year in Essentials. After looking at the choices that Ancient history offers to girls, she opted for a Greek goddess. So she started to research that person, write key word outlines, and compose an essay based on these. She needed to include 3 - 5 sources in her bibliography. For a 4th grader, an essay of that caliper is a big deal! She mastered it well, though! Fortunately, writing comes easy to her. She doesn't mind taking her pen and writing it all down, filling page after page. In the next step, various sentence openers and all kinds of decorations and dress-ups get added to make the text flow better and sound more sophisticated. The entire piece needs to be copied and improved several times.
In the end, the name of the chosen person is not supposed to be mentioned. In order to avoid giving the character away, the voice will be changed from 3rd person singular into 1st person singular. The student will personify the character and even dress up to look like them. How fun to build that costume trying various pieces from our wardrobes, looking for specific accessories and adding some golden bracelets and jewels! Friends and family get invited and an entire evening is filled with guessing these caesars, pharaos, and gods from Ancient times. For the kids it is great fun with just a bit of apprehension added having to present in front of a larger audience.

Eliane in the midst of her friends who ranged from Queen Esther to Cleopatra
Eliane inmitten ihrer Freundinnen.

Eliane has the advantage of having watched her sister in this event a few times. She saw Miriam disguising herself as Judas Maccabee in Cycle 1 and having a ball with her thick, black beard and a sword. She saw Miriam turning into the times of the Reformation as Martin Luther's wife Katahrina von Bora. I am beginning to see how this Faces of History is a true rite of passage for the kids. It takes some guts to step in front of a crowd all disguised and dressed up and present your essay. The children see the continuity of it: While the older siblings take part in it, the younger siblings watch them getting dressed up and practice their piece. They know that after a few years, it will be their turn.

Olevander dressed up as a pirate: hook, sword and all.

So I shouldn't be surprised when I hear Olevander talking and envisioning himself in that role. "I want to be Zeus when I do it.", he already announced. Or: "I need to pick an obscure character that NO ONE can guess." Those voiced thoughts show me how very much he sees himself taking on that challenge that isn't even his until 4th grade. I love it! This is outside of Halloween or theater productions. He likes dressing up anytime. He doesn't need an occasion for it. As the pictures show,  periodically he will get some disguise out or another and pretend play.

I'll try to attach Eliane's essay to give you a chance to guess who she was this year. :)

Jede liebe Zeile bringt Licht in unser Leben - Every written line shines light in our life

Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you.
1 Cor 15: 1-2

1 Kor. 15, 1-2

After all this time, I have made contact with my old Sunday School teacher from the time when I was in elementary school. When I contacted her out of the blue, she, of course, was more than surprised to hear from me after all these years. To hear from me gave her so much joy! She and her husband are getting on in age yet still live independently in their little apartment in my hometown. Ever since that first letter, we have kept contact by writing each other. Also, when I go and see my family, I will pay her a visit. What a surprise and joy it must be for anyone who once taught to hear from former students! I am so glad I went ahead and reached out. It absolutely made her day!

Each year for Christmas, I write a long letter to all of my family and friends near and far. When I sit down to write it, I don't really think of the younger generation that is connected already by other means to what we are up to. On the contrary, I have the older generation in mind - the people that don't use a computer, the ones without a cellphone. I very much think of these older folks that still happily write letters and receive them, the ones that keep contact via phone. Of course, I sent my old Sunday School teacher such a letter.
It didn't take long that I received an answer from her. Her writing gives me much food for thought.
She mentions a journey that she took in the year 1974 (that is a mere 45 years ago!) and follows it by saying: 'We mostly live by reminiscing about our past.'
I believe every word she says! In her life, photographs and old letters, newspaper clippings and pictures still have meaning. She resists the fast pace of life today.
Further I read in her letter:
'Every phone call, every visit, every written line shines light in our life. '
Her words confirm my original intentions. Knowing this, I will continue to include this dear old lady in my writings and visits whenever I can. This is the least that I can do.
As a final observation, I see her Christian belief in every line of her writing.
'God our Lord may give you all a blessed Christmas and a healthy and happy New Year and much courage for living every day anew!'
There is an inner joy that shines through her writing, a joy that is contagious. This little old lady is very much content with her life even in her old age! She finds that God is a wonderful support and she wholly leans on Him. She knows her life is coming to an end. However, her approaching death does not worry her. She knows that death will unite her with Jesus in heaven - without any sorrow, without any back ache, without any feelings of loss or regret.
I am so very glad that I contacted my old Sunday School teacher after all these years! Our correspondence and my visits in her little place enrich us both!

"Jeder Anruf, jeder Besuch, jede liebe Zeile bringt Licht in unser Leben."

For Miriam for her birthday - Miriams Geburtstag

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.
Psalm 119:105

Psalm 119:105

Our Miriam turned 14 years old! Hard to believe! Since she is our oldest, I will probably always have a hard time getting used to her breaking new ground.
I am so glad God blessed us with her birth 14 years ago! She has enriched our lives in many ways. We couldn't imagine life with her positive influence in it!

Miriam and her dog Jasper.
She has been asking for a dog for years. When she started writing persuasive essays for school, I asked her to persuade me with an essay on why we should get a dog. Believe me - that essay was written in no time! Once she finished reading it, she wanted a decision. And her reasons were convincing. So we got a dog!
Meet Jasper! He is a rescue from the pound and the sweetest thing.

Every so often, she likes to spend a few days at the farm, doing all kinds of farm and kitchen work. While there, she is being mentored by godly people. How cool is that?

Joy during the Christmas season - Freude im Advent

He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Psalm 40:4

Psalm 40, 4

Johannes feels important while 'fixing' his Nana's Christmas tree

As we celebrates Christmas this year, it is so easy to fall into the rut of business.
Recitals and concerts, Christmas parties, last minute shopping, decorating and baking are all things that can contribute to the rush. There is a great pressure of preparing and getting it all done.
We are so busy, it is hard to pause and step back for a moment.
Does this time of the year have to be this packed?
Why do we rush from event to event?
Can we just skip some of those invitations and still enjoy preparing for Christmas?
What about reading books aloud, playing some games together, singing songs and making music as a family? These unhurried, enjoyable family times are what the children will remember. Just enjoy each other's company and make some memories that last.

While our family is enjoying this cheerful season, there are many people that find no meaning in it.
Think about all the people that are old, lonely, or without family, those that are widowed, or estranged from their family. Celebrating Christmas seems to be all about celebrating family. So these folks may very well just endure the season while trying to make it through. Their broken families, their loneliness, their missing loved ones seem to become even more painfully obvious during this time.
How can we reach out? How can you spread some cheer into their lives?
There are many ways to share the love: Send some cookies to a difficult co-worker, invite your single neighbor to a meal, send some personal greetings to a new widow, offer to take a homebound acquaintance to church. There are lots of ways to reach out and touch people around you in their loneliness. There are various ways to reach older people in their isolation.
Serving in this way can be such a rewarding experience!
Here is an example from our experience: People from our church went Christmas caroling this year to shut-ins and senior citizens in our community. We singers ranged from age 2 to 70! By singing we spread some Christmas cheer, provided some welcome diversion, and best of all: We conveyed hope in the birth of the Savior.
What a beautiful and fulfilling experience!
