Olevaner is 3! - Olevander ist 3!

God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.
Eph. 3:20

The other day, Olevander said to his Nana: "My birthday is not ready yet."
Now it is time, though:He turned 3 years old!
Three years ago, we got to take home a little helpless bundle from the hospital fed through a feeding tube and whose chest scar from his first open heart surgery was still fresh. Three years ago, we were 3rd time parents but felt like starting from scratch with all the necessary precautions of a fragile shunt patient. Three years ago, we were wondering how long we were going to be given with our newborn son with just one ventricle.
Fast forward and this pale heart baby turned into this little exuberant boy full of humor, confidence, and love.
Amazing! Trust God and He can do amazing things.

Eph. 3, 20

Erst kuerzlich erklaerte Olevander seiner Oma ('Nana'): "My birthday is not ready yet."

I picked a number of pictures of him from our recent trip to Germany.

My children really like this cute little water fountain on our way to town. A jump on a stone block will bring forth a squirt of water out of the cobble stones. It is fun watching how many people will make a small detour from the sidewalk to try it themselves, old or young - hardly anybody passes without jumping.

My brother Ragnar - who owns a roofing company - is proud to show off his cherry picker. We are all looking forward to this but Olevander especially can't wait to be part of this adventure. We are about to go up 'high into the sky' how he would call it.

Now it is Papas turn to go up and we get to watch.

One of the major milestones that happened during our trip to Germany: Olevander shed his diapers and now goes to the bathroom. Yay!
(The only trouble in a German town is to find one. We are not in the U.S. where virtually every store has a restroom for its customers.)

This peek-through picture completes a little series that I started with the girls.

Eliane now (age 5), and Miriam at age 5.

Olevander with his little friend Edda. Aren't they cute?
He looks so big!
Olevander mit seiner kleinen Freundin Edda. Sind die beiden nicht suess?
Er wirkt so gross!

Swinging with cousin Marcus is fun!
Schaukeln mit Cousin Marcus macht Spass!

Going for a little spin on Marcus' balance bike.
Eine kleine Ausfahrt auf Marcus' Laufrad.

Olevander spotted a guitar! Guess what? Now he has locked onto this band. I went ahead and bought their CD ... with the result that now he puts it on all the time! He loves it - loudly - and calls it 'the crazy Musik'.

My little guitar fan will not say no to a mandolin.

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Psalm 23:1

Why it’s important to ask about your baby’s heart during an ultrasound

Heading to your baby's 18-20 week old ultrasound soon? Remember to ask these important questions:

Do you see four chambers in the baby's heart?
Are there two upper chambers (left and right atria), each with a valve controlling blood flow out of them?
Are there two lower chambers (left and right ventricles), each with a valve controlling blood flow out of them?
Do the vessels leaving the heart (aorta and pulmonary artery) cross each other as they exit?
Is the wall between the two lower chambers intact, without any holes?
Does everything in the heart look normal?

I found these questions at the Boston Children's website at childrenshospitalblog.org.
Please go ahead and check out their entire post including a touching video.

Even before Olevander's heart defect affected our lives I have always had a pet peeve about the obligatory question 'Do you know what you are having?', or the notion 'We are headed to the ultrasound to find out what we are having.'
Is the big ultrasound just about finding out about the sex of your baby?
Is the whole test being reduced to finding out whether you'll have a boy or a girl?
Is everything else they check at that time just secondary - hardly worth mentioning?
Is having a baby with a healthy heart, a complete set of organs, a brain, an intact lip and cleft (and all the items of the long list that can go wrong) just being taken for granted?

It is no coincidence that I bring up this topic here. Richard and I went to have our ultrasound today. We got the reassuring news that baby is healthy all the way around. Praise the Lord!
We know that everything else is going to fall into place, including whether girl or boy. God will take care of us and the needs of our growing family.
By the way, I am doing fantastic! Otherwise I wouldn't have braved a month long trip to Germany.
In short, we are all doing well, we are happy and we are looking forward to October when we get to meet this little one.

Steht Babys 2. Ultraschall zwischen der 18.-20. SSW bald an? Wird die Feindiagnostik vorgenommen? Dafuer sind diese wichtigen Fragen entscheidend:
Koennen Sie 4 Herzkammern sehen?

Eliane at work - Eliane malt

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them;
for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”
Matt 19:14

It has been a while that I published Eliane's art. This pause on my side has nothing to do with a pause of art activities on her part. Far from it! The art production continues to go strong. A constant stream of drawings continues to go on the big art pile and sometimes I don't even know how to deal with that inflow. One solution: Why not show it here?
I admire her originality. She doesn't seem to be short of fresh ideas. And yet, somehow I can detect a style emerging. I love how this 5 year old can be totally in it, concentrating and letting nothing distract her. This one is certain: Eliane enjoys getting her hands on pencil and paper immensely. She loves 'drawling' (that's how she says it). I am beginning to realize that God gave her an eye for visual art. Let's see how she is going to use it.
I really enjoy her original pieces. But hey, I am the Mom. What else can I say?
Let her work speak for itself.

Mal sehen, was sie daraus macht.
Was soll ich schon anderes sagen?
Lassen wir einfach ihre Bilder selber sprechen.

Here is the finished product. She explained her piece at great length to me (it has been a while). It shows, of course, our family, dark rain clouds moving in and getting everyone wet.

This one is our house with a fox lurking about (in her eyes at that time the stereotype of a bad creature). We are sleeping in one room, some of us are eating at the table, and some are peeking out of the door. The door comes, of course, complete with a door bell :) ...

... and even opens!
... und oeffnet sich sogar!

This one is a favorite of mine. Her comment upon completion was: This is our family sleeping. (From left to right:) Eliane dreams of our home. A little mouse is in her bed. Papa dreams of Miriam. And Mutti dreams of Olevander.

This is a figure of the type of people that Eliane draws these days. They can be quite fierce looking but that doesn't bother her a bit! The setting of the day time is important and usually not missing: either a night picture with moon and stars, or a day time picture with the sun present (shining or grumpy).
Solche Menschen malt Eliane viel in diesen Tagen.

Here, Eliane is using play dough on paper. She is experimenting with facial features and how they change the entire expression. We had done none of this of this beforehand. She just came up with this one day.
