Happy Birthday, Olevander! - Hoch sollst du leben! Zum Geburtstag fuer Olevander

Anyone who believes in me may drink!
For the Scriptures declare 'Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.'
John 7:38

Joh. 7, 38

Olevander started to count down the days to his birthday. He wrote a birthday wish list. Keeping his eye on the calendar, he was aware what was going to happen.
And now he is turning 9 years old! And he is excited!
I am so grateful for this boy! He is inquisitive, tenacious, artistic, smart, and loving.
I am glad God blessed us with him!
Happy Birthday, mein Schatzkind!

Was fuer eine Aufregung!

Olevander beaming. Here is still wearing the braces he shed just the other day.
Olevander strahlt.

Taking stock during the Corona crisis - Was ist wichtig? - immer noch Coronakrise -

Cast your burden on the Lord,
And He shall sustain you.
Psalm 55: 22

Wirf dein Anliegen auf den Herrn,
und er wird für dich sorgen.
Psalm 55, 22

As the Corona Pandemic continues to consume the news and our minds, it is a great time to get back to the basics and assess what is important in life. What is important to you in life? What makes life worth living? Who do you want to spend time with? What do you want to spend time on? Think about it!
Even as this lockdown was a temporary measure, it showed us that life on earth is just a finite time. We need to use our life time well.
In thinking this through, I could make well-intented suggestions of what not to do, as in: Don't spend too much time on the news or on social media!, or: Don't just complain about things.
Instead let me put it positively and let me share my personal list of what is important in my life. As with all lists, it is incomplete, items overlap and they are not necessarily in order. :)

Family. Make the most of the time with whom you share life with. If you have kids, enjoy them! Hug them and spend time with them. Believe me, this unusual time can be stressful to them as well. Make the mundane memorable.
During this lockdown, we had lots of telephone and video conversations with people in our family that we couldn't see. The children started writing lots of letters to family and friends. The trip to the mailbox started to become interesting as replies arrived regularly.
Nana who has just moved into a retirement living can no longer come and go as she pleases. We have visited her several times at her place and talked with her standing on her balcony. We even brought the instruments out and the kids played for her across the parking lot!

Faith. It is pretty clear that we are not here on earth by accident. What is your purpose? Where are you going to go after this life ends? Our family believes in a Creator, in the Almighty God, in the life that Jesus gave for our sins. We know that life's sorrows and sufferings are temporal and very finite. That belief gives us immense hope. We share this hope with all Christians across the globe. During the lockdown, we continued to listen to the online sermons that our church provided. Our pastor called us several times to check on us. Sure, we miss our church service in person and we miss our church family. But we are connected in spirit and we can always find support in God's Word.

Stories. Aren't stories what life is made of? Our family loves stories! We love read alouds shared together, we love movies shared together. We love audiobooks shared together. Those stories give us something to talk about. They bind us together. They provide common knowledge and insider jokes. They are enjoyable and fun! Some of these audiobooks and movie series might take us weeks, sometimes months to get through but that is also the beauty of it! That way, we are in the story even longer and keep talking about what might happen, who our favorite character is, and how we liked certain parts.

Fitness and exercise. It is so important to get proper exercise! Make your heart pump and feel the sweat. Whatever your preferred exercise is that does these things for you, do it! During the recent weeks, we have used our trampoline well. My oldest daughter uses fitness equipment on a daily basis. Used to altitudes while hanging on aerial silks in the gym, she even installed a rope into the tree so she can continue her circus sport to some degree.

Outdoors. In our family, we need to see the sky above our head on a regular basis. It is crucial for our wellbeing. We need to go on walks or on bike rides, even on boat rides. Even during the lockdown, we continued to go out, take our dog for a walk, and explore the nearby parks. Since all of our afternoons were suddenly free, we were able to spend a lot of time out of doors and enjoy the beautiful spring we have had.

Hobbies. Engage in your hobbies. Make time for them. For me it is reading, scapbooking, puzzles, photography, writing. As a family, we have enjoyed puzzling together. It is good for all age groups and can be done over time. What grabs your attention and keeps it?

Finally, try something new. There should be always room for something new. In my case, it was the pogostick. Years ago, I found a used pogostick at a rummage sale and bought it for next to nothing. After years of hibernation in the garage, it finally had its shining moment! In the midst of the quarantine, I came across the pogostick and realized this is great exercise. After starting lightly, I added 10 jumps each day. By doing that, believe it or not, I reached 300 jumps! That, I felt, was a good number. So that is what I now do daily. This intense exercise takes all but 5 min. A great new habit, something new. What is your new hobby? New sport? New interest?

In the end, if you live one day at a time, it comes down to the question: How did I spend this day? Did I spend it on the things and with the people that are important to me?
Did I spend it in fear? Or did I spend it in hope?

I will finish with this beautiful quote.
Fear does not stop death. It stops life.
And worrying does not take away tomorrow’s troubles,
it takes away today’s peace.

Corona Crisis April 2020 - Coronakrise April 2020

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
Psalm 56:3

Psalm 56:3

Everyone talks about Corona.
Corona is the topic that dominates the media.
The world is in lockdown. It is a bizarre situation. Many stores are closed. Companies are working only at a minimum. We are supposed to stay home.
For 6 weeks now, we have lived in lockdown.
These days, we talk much on the phone, often with video. After some of those conversations and from watching some features in the media, I am beginning to realize that everyone will have their own story how they lived through Corona. Everyone experiences these days very differently. Many experience this time of the quaratine as restrictive, isolating, even depressing. Many fear for their future, if their business is not allowed to operate, if their income is faltering, if their job is gone.
Strangely, we do not know anyone personally who has gotten infected by the virus, no one who was admitted to the hospital because of it, and no one who died from COVID-19. I think this adds to the bizarre feeling.
It will be like huge puzzle, everyone will be able to add their piece, and together it will complete the picture. As one of those many puzzle pieces, I will add our story and describe how we live during the Corona crisis.

To start off, we are doing well!

Fortunately, as homeschoolers we are not affected by the closing of the schools. We can continue with reading, writing, arithmetic, and everything else that we do normally. Our learning these days is not dominated by the computer. We spend just a single day of the week, our community school day, in front of the computer. I am glad it is only this one day per week! We find it tiring and not at all the same as a regular school day spent in class. Nowadays, a lot of people call it homeschooling what their public schooled kids are supposed to do at home. However, it is not homeschooling, rather it should be called distance learning.

Dad, Jason, continues to go to work and has for weeks. He is one of the few who do. His work was essential to his company. Miriam, now and then, will catch the opportunity and ask to drive. With her learner's permit, she is eager to get as much driving practice as she can.

Miriam is getting her driving practice.
Miriam uebt sich im Autofahren.

All of our afternoon activities have been canceled. No music lesson, no classes, no swimming pool. As sad as that is, all of our commitments that filled our weekly calendar are gone. All of a sudden, we have time! And we use it for family activities. We eat on our porch. We practically live on our porch where we puzzle, draw, color, listen to audio books, and play.

Lunch on the porch
Mahlzeit draussen

We spend time in our yard. The kids hop on our trampoline. They have built a hideout in the corner of our property. In the midst of the English ivy, they have laid out pathways, build 'rooms', and even came up with a swing. They had so much fun setting it all up!
In short, we are making the most of our house and of our yard! We are making the most of this unusual time.
When you have a dog and kids you have to leave the house. Beautiful Lake Lanier is close - that is where we head a lot these days, on foot or by bike. We have even had our first trip on the lake with the kayak. It is so beautiful on the water!
We also have a bunch of parks close by that offer lots of green, lots of woods, and fresh air. We can't help it but we love to go these parks! We go on bike rides, we go hiking, and we play at the creek. The kids like to dig in the sand, to wade in the cold creek water, and to let leaves and sticks go down with the current. It is in those places that we feel the happiest! We have discovered so many animals recently! Salamanders, crawdads, frogs, lizards, deer, snakes, even owls! Often, it is just a matter of time until we get to see the first animal. Eliane is very skilled in catching amphibians and reptiles. I think she got that from my mother! Get her a container and with a bit of skill and luck she will manage to catch the first crawdad! Then she will happily show the others. Of course, we always catch and release.

The kids are letting a bullfrog go back into the creek.
It is just wonderful out there! A few hours at the creek and it is easy to forget this odd situation out there.
This is our current situation, a very happy situation.
Even if the whole world seems to go crazy these days, we will continue to trust in the Lord. We will not live in fear.

Life on the porch.

Eli has caught a young snake which we can now watch closely.

Corona or not, our Jasper wants to run! Even when the dog parks in our area are closed, dogs still need to be able to roam and run.

And here we are again at the creek building a dam.

Corona crisis, March 2020 - Coronakrise, Maerz 2020

Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they shall be called children of God.
Matthew 5:9

Glücklich sind, die Frieden stiften,

denn Gott wird sie seine Kinder nennen.
Matthaeus 5, 9

I was looking through some pictures of the last couple of weeks. They show my family living normal life: making music, attending various classes, going on a fieldtrip to the Botanical Gardens, playing in the snow on our family winter vacation. In light of the current Corona crisis, they all seem like memories of a distant past. We had so much activity and diversion. Did we know how to appreciate what we had?

Now we are learning to live with all kinds of restrictions. We are making cuts into our lives that we have never had to stop the spread of the virus. We are not allowedto engage in our regular life as we know it to stop the spread of the virus. We are supposed to practice social distancing to stop the spread of the virus.

These are unprecedented times. The world as we know it is changing right in front of our eyes. Every day we are faced with more sober news and more restrictions. They remind me of war times - even though I have never lived through times of war. Earlier in the year, we watched the Coronavirus spread from the Chinese city of Wuhan. Who knew of Wuhan before that? Now I am sure everyone knows Wuhan! Everyone will forever connect it with the virus that started its course there.

We watched the numbers of infections and deaths from afar like the tourists watched the Tsunami wave on the beaches of Asia in 2004. The tourists watched in fascination. They took pictures. They filmed it for agonizing long minutes... until they realized this immense water mass will reach THEM and they would have to run for their lives to save themselves.

And here we are, the Corona has reached us, it has long spread across the globe and has become a worldwide problem, has become a pandemic.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) tried to prevent the news about the virus from spreading. Some people have even started calling it the CCP virus. The Wuhan virus, the Chinese virus. Corona virus, COVID-19, SARS-CoV-2. All kinds of names pointing to the same virus and disease.

We are vulnerable. Society as we know it is vulnerable. I wish I would have a happy ending to this story. However, there is no happy ending just yet. We are still in the midst of it.

The good news is that in the midst of the crisis we can lean on our God to provide for us. We can pray to him and ask Him for strength for each new day. We can rely on His peace to calm us. And we can trust Him completely!
Read your Bible and find all kinds of encouraging passages. Let me share just a few of them with you.

The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The righteous person may have many troubles, but the LORD delivers him from them all; He protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken.
Psalm 34:17-20

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4: 6-7

Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.
Deuteronomy 31:6

Zwar bleiben auch dem, der sich zu Gott hält, Schmerz und Leid nicht erspart;
doch aus allem befreit ihn der Herr!
Psalm 34, 18-20

Macht euch keine Sorgen! Sagt ihm, was euch fehlt, und dankt ihm!

5 Mose 31, 6
