the Lord turns my darkness into light.
2 Samuel 22:29
How was the motto of Classical Conversations again?
To know God and to make Him known.
Amen!
Denn du, Herr, bist meine Leuchte;
der Herr macht meine Finsternis licht.
der Herr macht meine Finsternis licht.
2. Samuel 22, 29
Amen!
Johannes and his brother went along for the ride as they are still too young for classes.
Olevander had a good time playing and making friends. As a result of his CC year, he can now sing the song of the presidents. Isn't it nice to be able to grow up with older siblings to copy?
Nana is here on a visit and wants to see our day at CC.
It was Eliane first year in class. She quickly warmed up to her tutor, enjoyed her class time, and made friends. She enjoyed the science experiments, some of which involved hands-on experiences like taking apart an owl pellet or dissecting crayfish. Fortunately, she is not too skittish. She enjoyed the various art projects - Eliane just loves art.
However, if asked what her favorite part of the morning was she probably would answer: Presentations! Surely, that is not everyone's cup of tea! To be able to step in front of your class mates and for just a couple of minutes speak about a topic of your choosing is quite something for a 6 or 7 year old. Whether she talked about the growth of her bean plants, her homemade map of our neighborhood, our trip to Germany, or about some of her art - it didn't faze her!

For Miriam, it was the second year taking part in Classical Conversations. She knew how the morning would be spent:
Assembly,
New Grammar (not literally English Grammar, but new items to be learned in the subjects of Math, Timeline, History, English, Science, Latin, and Geography),
Presentations,
Science,
Art and Music,
Review games.
This year was Cycle 1, all about Ancient History.
That was the familiar schedule of the morning. The Essentials class was, however, new to Miriam. It introduces Creative Writing and Grammar. Doubtless, she learned a lot during this class! She learned how to dissect the English language and to diagram sentences, and how to put it all back together to write eloquent essays.
I got lots out of that class as well!

A highlight at the end of the school year was the Faces of History event. It gives the students a chance to present an historical figure from the time period studied, Ancient Times, and dress up as this person. An essay is then presented in first person singular so that it doesn't give away the name. Then the audience is asked to guess who this person was. Truly, a fun and educating evening!
Not to make it too easy: Miriam is a Jewish leader that fought in an uprising against the Greek occupation of Israel following the division of empire of Alexander the Great. The revolt is named after the man she portrays. After the rededication of the Jewish temple by this man a tiny oil flask miraculously burns for 8 days.
Who is she?
Look below to check your answer.
Miriams Klasse. Wer Lust zu raten hat, kann loslegen: Auf dem Bild sind Cleopatra, Perseus, Ankhesenamun, Artemis, Ares, Hapshepsut, Tutenchamun, Spartakus und Odysseus zu sehen.
Here are even more ancient people: The other class and a few more Roman generals and emperors are joining in the fun.
Finally, Miriam took up the challenge again. She studied hard, dove right into Ancient history, science, math, geography, English, timeline, and Latin.
Classical Conversations Cycle 1 includes 161 events and people in a chronological timeline (which is a song about 15 min in length), 24 history sentences to add depth to the timeline, 44 presidents, 120 locations and geographic features in Africa, Europe, and the Old World, 24 science facts including
classifications of living things and each continent's highest mountain, 5 Latin noun endings and their singular and plural declensions, English grammar facts including 53 prepositions, 23 helping verbs, and 12 linking verbs, Multiplication tables up to 15x15, common squares and cubes, as well as basic geometry formulas and unit conversions. That is over 400 pieces of information!
Once more, she underwent the rigorous proofing of being tested by 4 different people.
And she did it!
She became Memory Master of Cycle 1!
I am so happy for her that all her work paid off!

You can tell by the beaming faces: Miriam just found out that she became Memory Master!
Congratulations, my Schatzkind - you have earned it!
