for they shall be satisfied.
Matt 5:6
Glücklich zu preisen sind die, die nach der Gerechtigkeit hungern und dürsten;
denn sie werden satt warden.
Matt. 5, 6
I wrote this in 2016 after Fidel Castro's death.
I am so happy for the Cuban people! Fidel Castro's death will bring a dictatorship to an end. I am hopeful that there is a bright future ahead for Cuba.

This recent event and its documentation in the media bring up emotions and memories of my childhood.
Flores
During the 70ies Cuba sent thousands of young people to work in East Germany which needed workers to advance socialism. I remember the young Cuban college student Flores that my father invited home for a visit. I was a sandy haired preschooler at the time. Dark-skinned Flores took an immediate liking in me and gave me a little souvenir turtle as a present. The toy made of nut shells and coconut seemed to encapsulate his exotic appearance in my life. I remember the impression that this encounter had made on me. Flores may very well have been the first curly haired black person that I have ever met!

Oranges
During Christmas time, we got Cuban oranges for our school lunches.
Let's be honest: They were not popular. These oranges were known for their pulpy consistency. After some lengthy chewing, you just wanted to spit out everything that remained in your mouth and be done with it. As kids, we cracked so many jokes about Cuban oranges it wasn't even funny anymore! Time and again our teachers defended them in front of us sassy youngsters praising them as great oranges for juicing.
The fact of the matter was that East German government didn't buy them purposefully during the time of Advent and Christmas to make sure we had citrus fruit during that time. Instead, they were purchased at the time when they were at their lowest price on the world market. Citrus harvest just happens to be at the end of the year.
Knowing how wonderful oranges of Florida and the Caribbean islands can taste I do wonder what type we were actually presented back then. I do know, though, that the mere term 'Cuban oranges' does not bring tasty memories to mind.

Humberto
Many years later: A visit in Tampa, Florida with the Cuban father of a friend. Humberto was telling us his life story of how he was visiting relatives in Florida when the Coup happened in 1959. His parents conveyed the urgent message to their son not to return to his home land and by all means stay where he was. Fearing for his life, he did. He learned English, started a whole new life, made a living, married, and had children.
The sad truth is, in his long life of 70 plus years, he has not been back to his home country! I cannot imagine living so close to my home land and not being able to visit. He has been waiting for the day that Fidel Castro would hand over power - or die ... whichever came first. Is there hope now that the day has arrived?
It remains to be seen what will happen with the Cuban government.
When will they finally set the Cuban people free?
When will they finally open Cuba to the Free Market?
When will there be long-overdue changes in the right direction?
I have great hope for a bright future the Cubans and their beautiful island. Change must come.
I just pray and hope that change will come soon.
Soon enough for Humberto that he can finally visit the country of his youth.
Soon enough for all the Humbertos that they may live to see that change in the country of their youth.
